DevOps Built-in Access Levels, Security Groups and AAD Groups

Scenario:

in large organizations it?s so important that not all the colleagues who are working together on a project to be able to release/ deploy the product in production environment.

There must be always a check list to get ready for deploying in production. Nowadays this check list is called continuous integration/deploy (CI/CD).

The check list before deploy the product on production environment

Therefore the project team try to grant permission according to the responsibilities and tasks or each colleagues to team. On of the tools which we can use to develop a project with the agile method is Azure DevOps.

There is also possible to assign built-in Access Level and Security Group to each member of team as explained in follows.

The users/ members in Azure DevOps always have an assigned DevOps Group and Access Level.

DevOps Built-in Access Level

Access Level defines the Azure DevOps Features that a user or group can use.

Access Levels

Description

Basic

Basic supports full access to all Azure DevOps Board features

Stakeholders

Provides partial support for viewing and modifying work items but not using all features.

Visual Studio Subscriber

Free access to a limited set of features.

DevOps built-in security Groups

Security Groups define what users of groups can do with each Azure DevOps features.

Azure DevOps has mainly two different level of built-in groups [Microsoft Doc]:

The Team Administrator is the person who can grant permissions to specific features.

Project-Level Security Groups

Each project contains the following built-in groups:

Build Administrator

Contributor

Project Administrators

Project Valid Users

Readers

DevOps Security Groups

Description [Microsoft Doc]

Project readers

Permission to view project information, the code base, work items, and other artifacts but not modify them.

Project Contributors

Permission to contribute fully to the project code base and work item tracking. They cannot manage or administrator resources.

Project Administrators

Permission to administer all aspects of teams and project. Although they cannot create team projects.

Combination Matrix of the Access Level and Security Group in Project-Level

DevOps Security Groups

Access Levels

Description

Project Readers

Stakeholder

?

Project Readers

Basic

?

Project Readers

Visual Studio subscriber

?

Project Contributors

Stakeholder

Managers or users who don?t actively contribute to the code base but want to check project status or provide direction, feedback, feature ideas, and business alignment to a team.

Project Contributors

Basic

Full-time workers who contribute to the code base or manage project.

Project Contributors

Visual Studio subscriber

Code base contribution

Project Administrators

Stakeholder

The users, who are tasked to managing project resources. If them also need to contribute to the code base, then the Basic Access Level must be assigned to them.

Project Administrators

Basic

Managing project resources + Code base contribution

Project Administrators

Visual Studio subscriber

Code base contribution

Combination Matrix of the Access Level and Security Group in Collection-Level

DevOps Security Groups

Access Levels

Description

Project Collection Administrators

Stakeholders

The users, who are tasked with managing organization or collection resources and if they need to be contributed to the code base then they must be assigned to Basic Access Level.

Project Collection Administrators

Basic

?

Project Collection Administrators

Visual Studio Subscriber

?

Azure DevOps Levels

DevOps can be configured at different levels:

The focus of this document is Project-Level and object-Level.

Object-Level Groups

Managing the permission on Git branches.

Using Azure ADD Group in Azure DevOps

For managing the users the Azure DevOps can be connected to Azure AD. The AAD Groups can be used in Azure DevOps as well. But the Active directory Group hierarchy is not usable in Azure DevOps. It means the sub groups will not inherit the access level and permission group of their parent group.

Each AAD parent and sub group must be added separately to Azure DevOps and an Access Level and a Permission Group must be assigned to each one separately them.

The users which are assigned to the same AAD Group will have the same Access Level and Permission Group, which has been assigned to this AAD group in Azure DevOps.

The Advantage is:

A newly added user to AAD Group can login to Azure DevOps and there is no need for additional configuration.

Azure devops publish artifact - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Azure devops publish artifact Latestnews Azure devops publish artifact

How to publish artifacts separately for each project in solution from VSTS CI pipeline?

In my solution, I have two projects (a Asp.net MVC and a Windows Service). I want to create CI/CD pipeline to deploy web application and windows service on different VMs. But to achieve this my CI pipeline should be able to publish artifacts separately for both project and then I can feed these artifacts in CD pipeline for deployment. How artifacts for all projects can be published separately in a CI pipeline ?

PS: If I create two solutions each with one project only and create CI/CD pipeline separately, all works fine. But I want to achieve it with solution having multiple project as mentioned above.

3 Answers 3

You can use multiple, Publish tasks to create multiple artifacts in a single build definition.

For example lets say, you have below, as your current artifacts for a single project, comprising of _PublishedWebsites\MVS5WebApp (XCopy deployable website) and _PublishedWebsites\MVS5WebApp_Package (web deploy package).

If you want to separate these two, into two artifacts, you can use two Publish Artifact tasks as shown below, each one specifying exact path to publish (this path does not support wildcards, you just have to specify the folder you need to publish)

This will give you output as shown below.

In this example I just only used the Publish Artifacts task and created two artifacts using a single web site project. You can do same for your two project scenario. If you want to use wild card to filter more files before publish you can use "Copy File" task multiple times as required.

Vsts query News highlights Vsts query

Using Query Tile Pro to boost your Azure DevOps Dashboard

Cris Motinha

May 17, 2019 В· 6 min read

M etrics should be easy to find, easy to understand and easy to keep an eye on. When collecting Agile metrics such as Lead Time or Cycle Time, most of boards/dashboards systems have automatic widgets or reports and Azure DevOps board is one of them. And if you don?t find a ?native? solution, you can download one of the many widgets at Extension Gallery. Here I?m going to talk about my favorite widget to get more complex metrics, the ones that involve aggregation and math operations with more than one query result set.

Query re s ult tiles are an easy solution if you have to keep track of the total number of work items, for example, how many bugs or the sum of Story Points you have in an Iteration. But if you want the number of tasks instead, the default Query Tile won?t work. And this is where Query Tile Pro comes in.

As its publisher Mattias Sk?ld wrote, you can summarize field values, calculate min and max values on all fields, including text & date fields and much more. Here I?ll show you how you can include the widget in your dashboard and understand basic and advanced configuration modes.

Adding the widget

Before adding Query Tile Pro to your dashboard, you need to add it to your organization. On a dashboard, click on Edit, and on Add Widget, click on the link ?Extension Gallery?.

Query Tile Pro is the first result:

After clicking on it, it will open the main page of the product. Now click on Get it free, select your organization and click on Install. When it?s installed, it will show you this page, and you?re ready to go!

To add to a dashboard, open the desired dashboard, click on Edit and after clicking on Add Widget, it should appear in the list as the rest of the widgets. Just drag and drop or click on ?Add?.

Configuring Basic Mode

What to do when we want to count the children of a User Story? It?s pretty easy using Query Tile Pro. Let?s calculate how many Bugs we have inside new User Stories.

First of all, you need a query that returns all Bugs inside new User Stories.

Although Query Tile Pro doesn?t force you to save queries in Shared Queries as Query Tile does, I recommend it if you are going to use in a dashboard that other people than you have access.

Now, add the widget to a dashboard and open the Basic mode. In Query, select the query you created. As we want the count of the children, select Children for filter and Count for aggregation. Hit enter to update the result in the tile:

Now finish your tile adding a Title and a Subtitle!

Azure Pipelines: Automatic app versioning

Most of the software we use and depend on has a version number to communicate the impact of changes.
Learn how you can use Azure Pipelines to automatically generate a semantic version number (SemVer) for your software, based on your development workflow.

If you already have an Azure DevOps account, you can skip this step!
Azure DevOps is a Microsoft product offering all tools a development team needs to build and deliver great software. The first 5 users are free! You can find more information on the official website and register your account here: https://azure.microsoft.com/de-de/services/devops/.

For any further steps, we use the free Azure DevOps extension "GitTools". This small utility makes the heavy work generating the version number for us. Download the extension from the official Marketplace and link it to your organization: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=gittools.gittools.

Verify the successful installation by opening the extension list in your organization settings and check whether the "GitTools" extension is listed:

After the task is finished you have a bunch of variables available containing information about the calculated version. Have a look at the log output of the pipeline to see all variables or you can check out the extensions GitHub repository (https://github.com/GitTools/actions) To get the fully calculated version you can use $(GitVersion.SemVer).

To save the current version in your Git repository and to be able to compare them with other versions you can create a new Git tag. Modify your existing pipeline file and add two new steps. To be able to push the Git tag from within the pipeline to your repository, you need to set the "Contribute" permission in for the build service user to "Allow".

Synchronising GitHub Issues and Azure DevOps Work Items

Another integration between Azure DevOps and GitHub is in work planning and tracking, or project management if you like.

While from a technical perspective they will be achieved in a similar way, I believe we have a number of possible scenarios, with a couple of examples below:

use Azure Boards for backlog management, as well as having an open source or inner source model where stuff is published to GitHub and issues from consumers are publicly logged from there.

be independent from the project and portfolio management side of the story, where the PMO rolls backlog data coming from GitHub Issues into Epics and Features hosted natively in Azure Boards.

The solution is very straightforward - use Dan Hellem?s Action as it is, and mapping the Azure DevOps Work Item Type of choice to what makes the most sense in your circumstances. You could even use a different Area Path, if you want:

Let?s say we are tackling the first scenario: in that case opening an issue in the GitHub world will create a Bug in Azure DevOps, so that external contributors will have an opportunity of opening something in your backlog, with various reminders of the connection to GitHub:

This also means that if someone, as part of a Pull Request, mentions that specific issue via the AB# syntax in a comment, commits will be automatically associated to the Azure DevOps Bug!

This enables a real contribution workflow at both ends, where the GitHub Issues are treated as first class citizens rather than an afterthought.

The integration is deep both ways, as it requires the Azure Boards GitHub application on the GitHub account or organisation, and it will automatically configure the GitHub Connection on the Azure DevOps side:

On top of that, take a look at the Action?s source code - extending that will open the Pandora?s box when it comes to customising the Work Item created by the integration:

It is effectively a wrapper around the REST API, so you can tailor it down to your needs!

Azure pull request - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Azure pull request World news today live Azure pull request

Use pull request decoration in Azure DevOps with SonarCloud

Some time ago I wrote about how to fail your Azure Pipeline, if your SonarQube quality gate fails. I often get the request how you can do the same thing with SonarCloud. But it?s much better to use pull request decoration. This is really an awesome feature. You get the SonarQube Errors directly in the pull request and the quality gate is evaluated.

The configuration is a bit tricky and the options are pretty hard to find. And this only works in SonarCloud or with the SonarQube Developer Edition! I switched completely to SonarCloud ? this is much more convenient.

I asume that you already have a build with the prepare, run and publish tasks configured. Note that there is a different extension for SonarCloud then for SonarQube. Add and configure the tasks accordingly and run the build with the analysis.

Now got to the project in SonarCloud. Go to ?Generell Settings?, ?Pull Requests?. Select VSTS and enter a Personal Access Token for Azure DevOps that SonarCloud uses to connect to Azure DevOps.

Now run the build again. If the analysis is complete got the the branch policy in your Azure Repo. If you now add a new Status Policy you will find in the drop down a policy called ?SonarCloud/quality gate?. Select it and save the policy.

That?s it! Now create a pull request and enjoy the SonarCloud decoration. The Status Policy will fail the PR if the SonarCloud Quality Gate fails.

Чему вы научитесь

Требования

Описание

The One-Stop-Shop course for Vagrant is finally here! Master Vagrant from the start with our one of a kind tutorial.

Developers around the world know the grueling process of having to set up, deploy, configure and destroy environments depending on projects! Vagrant is the brilliant solution for eliminating the costly and time-consuming cycle of creating and destroying environments with each project.

Vagrant is an open-source product for building and maintaining portable virtual development environments. These virtual systems are cost-efficient to use for developing your project and then disassembling it when you are done. It is also a great way to manage and coordinate large projects, that require multiple technical stacks and developers.

Vagrant also makes it easier to set up, download, deploy packages, and even configuration by allowing developers to download prepackaged operating systems that include the required tools, libraries, and even services. And, if the prepackaged system doesn?t include everything you need, you can simply create your own virtual machine and convert it to Vagrant. That?s not all! The best part about Vagrant is that it allows you to create multiple customized copies for all the developers that are working on the project.

Let?s step into the future world of programming by mastering virtual machines with Vagrant in this amazing step-by-step breakdown course. The course has been created with experts to help you learn the complete ins and outs of Vagrant. While, this course will start at the very beginning with Vagrant, it does have a few expectations. You are expected to have an understanding of virtualization including related technologies such as VMWare and VirtualBox. You are also expected to know their way around Linux and its file system.

The course will breakdown Vagrant into simple and easy to understand sections and will cover everything from introduction to installation to Vagrant basics and functions, as well as network configurations, clustering, Vagrant boxes and so much more.

At the end of this course, you will not only have the theory of Vagrant, but also be confident enough to start using Vagrant for all your projects. So, what?s stopping you from stepping into the future of development? Enroll Now and let?s enter the virtual environment!

Maven in devops - Kabrinskiy Eduard

Maven in devops

[youtube]

Maven in devops Breaking news today Maven in devops

DevOps Engineer

Originally DevOps was mode of operation in which Developers and Operations worked together.

It was created because in many companies there were silos: Developers, (Maual) QA engineers, Operations and the communication among these silos was less than ideal. (also know as "really bad").

The DevOps movement eliminated the silos, made the whole process much smoother.

Unfortunately many companies instead of eliminating the silos have just renamed the Operations team to be DevOps and expected them to wirte some code to their operations.

Some companies were even worse and created a new silo called DevOps.

Anyway, today we are here and there is a job title called DevOps Engineer and there is a huge lack of good DevOps engineers. So what do you need in order to become one?

The content of this job is also very different among organizations. Some places they mostly do "Cloud System Administration". In other places they do the job of what used to be "Configuration Management": build systems, CI (Continuous Integration) systems. In some places they might be responsible of the branching and merging strategy of the developers. In some places they are the ones deploying the applications, in other places thet create only the tools and the teams themself actually handle the deployment.

So there is no good definition of what a "DevOps enginner" does and needs to know.

Non-Technical Skills

Before we get to the technical part let's talk a bit about the non-technical skills.

A DevOps engineer must be able to communicate well with their co-workers throughout the organization. The DevOps team is in many cases the glue connecting the various technical teams. It is a service team that provides service to many other teams.

It also means the DevOps engineers will get requests from around the company, not just from their manager. A DevOps engineer needs to be able to handle this. Find a way to be able to say no to all the urgent requests.

In many ways it is also a rather thankless job. Most people will only come your way when they have some problem. When something does not work. And then it is urgent.

As a DevOps enginner you'll have to learn about tons of technologies. You won't really have the time to delve deeply in any of the technologies, but you will be expected to be the expert.

This can be both overwhelming and extreamly fun. I personally love experimenting with tools. I wish I could do more of it.

Most likely you'll also need to explain many tools, and the limitations of those tools to a lot of people in the organization, so you will need good communication skills.

Yes, I know Sysadmins or Operations people have a bad reputation of being uncommunicative. So if you are someone who can communicat you'll have a clear advantage over them.

Technologies

I have another page where I listed tons of technologies used by DevOps, way too many. Let me give an overview here.

Version Control

The base of every good operation is to be able to track changes. Git is the de-facto standard open source Version Control System (VCS) so I recommend you become very familiar with it.

It is also usually importanto to deal with the "Git server", that is GitHub, BitBucket, GitLab or some similar system.

Linux

The majority of companies use Linux as their servers. You must become familiar with Linux via the CLI (Command Line Interface). I mean the shell.

The specific distribution matters less, though in most places I've encountered CentOS, RedHat, and Ubuntu.

Networking

It is probbaly quite important to have a good understaning of Networking protocols. Starting from TCP/IP up to higher layers of the Internet protocols.

Virtualization - Containers

These days Docker and Kubernetes are all the rage.

Programming languages

The two most frequently used languages by DevOps engineers are Bash, the Unix/Linux shell and Python.

Others

There are tons of other technologies for DevOps I've already listed elsewhere and that list is probbaly also missing quite a few items.

Maven in devops

Continuous integration development - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Continuous integration development

[youtube]

Continuous integration development Live news Continuous integration development

Continuous Integration

Quick Links

Definition

Teams practicing continuous integration seek two objectives:

minimize the duration and effort required by each integration episode

be able to deliver a product version suitable for release at any moment

In practice, this dual objective requires an integration procedure which is reproducible at the very least, and largely automated. This is achieved through version control tools, team policies and conventions, and tools specifically designed to help achieve continuous integration.

Common Pitfalls

As suggested above, the practice of continuous integration should not be confused with the tools that assist it (CI servers such as Cruise Control, Hudson, etc.). Continuous integration is first and foremost a matter of attitude rather than tools, and it relies on more than one kind of tool: tools for testing, tools for automating build processes, and tools for version control.

Continuous integration aims to lessen the pain of integration by increasing its frequency. Therefore, ?any? effort related to producing intermediate releases, and which the team experiences as particularly burdensome, is a candidate for inclusion in the team?s continuous integration process. (This is the reasoning that leads teams to continuous deployment.)

Origins

1993: the phrase ?continuous integration? is already in use and thus predates what will later be known as Agile processes, for instance an article contrasts it with ?scheduled? integration, and recommends the latter, citing ?lack of thorough testing? as one issue with continuous integration; this helps explain why the automated testing favored by Agile teams is an enabler for continuous integration

1996: Steve McConnell describes the ?Daily Build and Smoke Test? technique, used at Microsoft for Windows NT 3.0 during the 1990?s; the emphasis is not so much on the automation as on the frequency, the daily cycle being at that time considered ?extreme?

1998: continuous integration is listed among the core practices of Extreme Programming

2000: an article by Martin Fowler provides perhaps the most complete description of the continuous integration practice available at that time

2001: Cruise Control, the first ?continuous integration server?, is published under an open source license; it automates monitoring of the source code repository, triggering the build and test process, notifications of the results to the developers, and archival of the test reports; the period 2001-2007 sees a large number of similar tools appear, leading perhaps to an excessive focus on tools over practice

2004: an article by Alberto Savoia proposes ?Extreme Feedback Devices? such as lava lamps or dedicated monitors, to display the results of the most recent integration, an important innovation in CI

Signs of Use

For most teams, continuous integration in practice amounts to the following:

use of a version control tool (CVS, SVN, Git, etc.)

an automated build and product release process

instrumentation of the build process to trigger unit and acceptance tests ?every time any change is published to version control?

in the event of even a single test failing, alerting the team of a ?broken build? so that the team can reach a stable, releasable baseline again soonest

optionally, the use of a tool such as a continuous integration server, which automates the process of integration, testing and reporting of test results

Look for a dedicated display in a prominent spot of the team room: this can be a normal monitor, an LED display or even a lava lamp, with the sole purpose of reporting on the result of the most recent integration.

Observe also how the team responds to a broken build, suggesting that a defect may have been detected. If the team is aware of defects, but tolerates them or continues working on a product that isn?t in a releasable state, the term continuous integration no longer applies, irrespective of tooling!

Alternatives to Azure

Introduction to Azure

Various organizations offer many cloud computing platforms. Windows Azure is one of them which is provided by Microsoft. Azure is the managed data centers that are used through a global network to build, deploy deliver services and manage applications.

Microsoft Azure offers a wide range of services that you can use without buying and supplying your own hardware. Azure provides quick solutions for development by its faster computing speed, network and application services, and storage and provides the resources. Microsoft Azure is a public cloud and it provides services like PaaS and IaaS. These services support many programming languages and frameworks. Microsoft Azure Stack is an add-on to Windows Server 2016. By using it, the user can deploy many-core Azure services in the data center.

Web development, programming languages, Software testing & others

List of Microsoft Azure Alternatives

While Azure provides a wide range of services, there are some factors users need to know about Azure. Azure can be costly depending on your setup. It is scalable but that scalability comes at a cost. There are some reports based on users reviews and testing which states that there are a repeated crash and incomplete documentation on some projects.

Hence the list of Azure alternatives is given below:

1. OpenShift

OpenShift is a free source but they have some limitations. These open shifts used for hosting and creation purpose. This will empower to frame the application and host app on the openshift Server to be able to change and deploy. Open-Shift is a Red-Hat cloud platform designed to simplify hosting application and development. This will give us complete control of your application and coding which we will prefer. You can choose to make your app and use your custom domain name for marketing purposes out of any major programming language. For Example ? java, Ruby and etc.

2. Amazon EC2

Amazon EC2 has design the simple web service interface of the Amazon EC2 allows you to acquire and configure minimum friction capacity. This allows you to control your computer resources completely and allows you to run in the proven computer environment of Amazon. Amazon EC2 modifies the computing economy by enabling you to pay only for the capacity you actually use. With Amazon EC2, you can increase or decrease capacity in minutes, not hours or days. The commitment of the Amazon EC2 Service Level Agreement is 99.99% for each Amazon EC2 region. Amazon EC2 grants you to select your operating system and applications to choose a configuration of memory, CPU, instance and boot partition size.

3. Wix

An Israeli cloud-based web development platform.
4. DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean is designed for developers. By using the workspace offered by DigitalOcean, team members can access information from any location by setting up permissions. It provides deployment, iteration, management, and scalability of a cloud application. It has subscriptions like monthly yearly etc. based on the user?s requirement. It also releases updates and manages apps and services. It automates application deployments, monitoring, instance replication, cluster scheduling, and seamless application releases.
Continuous Deployment in DevOps

What is Continuous Deployment in DevOps?

Our previous tutorial in this series explained the meaning of Continuous Delivery.

Continuous delivery is an automated deployment pipeline with automated and manual gates in between whereas Continuous Deployment is the continuous delivery pipeline with no manual gates in between.

So, Continuous Deployment need not be a ?Release to Production?. But the code is deployed to the production and kept under mute using ?Feature Toggles? and when it is ready, the Feature toggle will be turned on.

These feature toggles avoid any risk of failure of the feature functionality in the production by switching OFF the deployed feature in the production.

This option also allows turning on the feature to a certain set of users or certain geography or a certain customer site or even for internal employees for initial evaluation and feedback.

VIDEO Part 3 Block 3: Continuous Deployment ? 6 minutes 28 seconds

Video Transcript:

Just before the previous video, we learned about the continuous delivery approach and its benefits.

In this block let us learn about continuous deployment and how is it different from continuous delivery. And we will also understand the meaning of continuous testing and the continuous testing pipeline in DevOps.

Here, I wish to introduce another term of DevOps, that is, continuous Deployment, which should not be confused with continuous delivery because the short form of both is CD.

As we already know, Continuous delivery or CD is the Process of delivering the software or software Updates to the production in smaller increments, ensuring that the software can be released any time to the production.

It is an automated deployment pipeline with both automated and manual gates in between.

Now, let us come to Continuous Deployment.

Continuous deployment is also a continuous delivery pipeline but without any manual gates in between. I mean, no manual gates or no manual intervention, from the initial code commit till the code is into the production.

This picture will explain you the continuous deployment pipeline.

As you see in this diagram, it is same as a continuous delivery pipeline, there will be a build trigger followed by a code check-in, automated compilation, build, unit tests, deployment and other automates tests till the ?deployment to the production?.

Here I won?t call this as ?Release to production? but deployment to production, which I?ll explain in a little while.

So, there are no manual testing phases or manual approval gates or in other words no manual intervention at all.

This happens mainly in a matured organization and in case of delivery or updates of matured products, where DevOps practices are established very well and hence just automated delivery pipeline is sufficient enough to take care of quality and no manual testing and quality gates are required.

However Feature toggles are necessary for Continuous deployment though present in both the methods, i.,e continuous delivery and continuous deployment, and they are must for Continuous deployment pipeline.

The feature toggles avoid any risk of failure of the feature functionality in the production by switching OFF the deployed feature in the production. So, this feature flag ensures that all the features that are deployed on to the production can be turned ON or OFF based on the requirement and hence need not be immediately released to the end users.

As quoted earlier, continuous deployment need not be necessarily a release to customers but a ?deployment to production?. This option of continuous deployment is used in deploying certain time-bound features.

To give an Example , a value-added service offer of a mobile operator to the customers, during Christmas, can be deployed via continuous deployment method to production any time, so that the feature or value-added service package is kept ready on the live and opened up during Christmas or at midnight of the new year etc., through a feature toggle.

And this feature can be opened up in production during wee hours or sleeping hours and safely be turned on to the end users later during the day, after ensuring that it is working fine.

Basically, it?s like deploying the code/feature to the production, but not running the code until it is the right time or the team makes a decision to release the code or feature.

This option also allows turning on the feature to a certain set of users or certain geography or certain customer site or even for internal employees for initial evaluation and feedback.

People also refer to the DevOps practice as CI-CD model, where CD refers to continuous delivery, continuous deployment. And this is all about continuous deployment.

In the upcoming video tutorial, we will learn about ?continuous testing? and continuous testing pipeline.
